Tooth Pocket Pillows

A No-Sew Fabric Craft for Kids

Apr 4, 2008 Christy Jones

These smiling felt pillows have a pocket that's perfect for holding a newly lost tooth. They're easy to make from felt and glue, and they require no sewing.

What better way for kids to prepare for the tooth fairy than with a fun, easy to make craft? These tooth pillows can look like a self-portrait, or a friend. Just choose the color eyes, hair, and skin you want to make your pillow unique. It can even be a favorite animal if you substitute animal ears for the hair.

Supplies

To make a tooth pocket pillow, you’ll need:

  • one piece of flesh or fur colored felt
  • one piece of felt for the hair
  • scraps of colored felt or markers for the face
  • scraps of white and red felt for the mouth
  • plastic wiggly eyes (optional)
  • glue
  • stuffing
  • optional: clothes pins or binder clips

Make the Face

First, cut two 6-inch circles from flesh or fur colored felt. (You may want to trace a small paper plate or plastic lid.)

Cut out eyes, a nose, and cheeks from scraps of colored felt and glue them to one of the circles, or draw a face with markers. (You can also use plastic wiggly eyes.) You don’t need to draw a smile since the mouth will be a separate felt pocket.

Make a Tooth Pocket

Next, cut out a big smile from white felt. To decorate it, you can draw teeth on the felt using a fabric or permanent marker, or add red around the edges for lips. You can also make lips from strips of red felt. Cut one strip for the lower lip and two for the upper lip. Glue the strips of red felt to the edges of the mouth, and let the glue dry before continuing.

Once you have the mouth made, put glue along the lower and side edges of the backside of the mouth. (Do not put any glue along the top edge.) Put one finger behind the mouth while gluing it to the face, so that the mouth forms a pocket.

Make the Pillow

Glue the two flesh-colored circles together, leaving the top edge open. Let the glue dry completely, then gently fill the pillow with stuffing. Glue the top edge closed (you may need to hold the felt together while the glue dries, either with your fingers or with clothes pins or binder clips).

Add the Finishing Touches

Finally, cut felt hair pieces for the front and back of the head and glue them to the pillow. Or, you can add animal ears to make the pillow look like a bear, dog, cat, rabbit, or favorite animal.

Now the pocket pillow is ready for the tooth fairy... all it needs is a tooth!
